The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation ever since the late 1990s. The first step was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in another state.
Another stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce better competition the market was divided into two types of entities
- Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers Retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2016 , South East Queensland 's electricity market was fully deregulated. This meant that, for the first time, customers could switch to the provider who had cheaper electricity prices.
There are two electricity distributors in Queensland
- Energex
Energex supplies electricity to homes and businesses in a region covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the NSW border to Gympie in the north. Including the major population areas of Brisbane, Logan, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands and Moreton Bay. - Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy distributes electricity to Queensland including rural areas and coastal and also remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.
Tips to lower your electricity consumption to save money
Here is a list of easy to implement ways to reduce how much you spend on electricity
- Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors or around your windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Rather than turn on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, jumper, warm socks, booties).
- Turn off appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Avoid usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Prevent the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Use less lighting. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace older lighting with LED lights.
- Close the doors to rooms that you aren't using, so that you only cool or heat a smaller area.
- Reduce air conditioning use by opening the windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
